Everybody is fighting to overcome something. Too many do this alone, thinking that nobody can help, nobody will understand, or nobody would care. We all have a deep desire to hear the words, “I see you for who you are and I won’t leave you.”
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, Americans are experiencing an epidemic of loneliness which causes negative consequences for their mental and physical health. The Surgeon General’s report stated that social connection is so critical to life that it, “may be one of the strongest protective factors against self-harm and suicide among people with and without serious underlying mental health challenges.”
Lava Lamp Films’ current movie in development, Adieu, incorporates principles of compassion, empathy, connection, relationships — with the goal of bringing hope. One of the heartfelt songs planned for Adieu is called “Fight for You.”
The powerful song was written by Hannah Weirich for her brother Austin, who died by suicide on September 10, 2016. “Fight for You” emphasizes the choice to walk with someone even through the darkest of times. The lyrics draw upon the significant need in every person to feel known and seen for who they truly are, even in their weakness. Listeners are challenged to see people in their pain, push past the discomfort, and be there for them.
“Fight for You” represents the core message of Adieu, that there is inherent value in every person and they are worth fighting for. The themes of Adieu and “Fight for You” both inspire and encourage others to reach out and let their loved ones know that they will fight for them. Connection and relationship are life-giving treasures.
Everyone has a need for connection — to not be alone — to be seen and to be vulnerable — to know who we truly are and that what we struggle with isn’t too much to handle. We all need that person who will stand by us.
Exposing weakness can be terrifying, but in many cases it’s the beginning of the path to moving forward. Relationships are worth it. You are valuable. You are worthy. You are not alone. Let’s fight for each other.
